Had Cigar City Jai Alai 2 nights ago. It was pretty good, but would not be listed in my top 10 IPA's. Not sure exactly where I would rank it, but I didn't find it to be overly good. Better than average, but not great by any stretch of the imagination.

I have two browns in the fridge for later on tonight: Bad Penny, from Big Boss brewing in Raleigh, NC; and Bed Of Nails, from Hiwire brewing in Bret Favre's hometown of Kiln, MS. Will give some reviews later.

It is very good. Pliny the Elder is the best.
Pliny used to be the top of the mountain around 2010 but others have caught up at this point.

I still love Pliny the Elder. It was my first love for an IIPA but Boneyard in Oregon for one is making incredible IPAs. Alpine in San Diego too. Shit Heady Topper is damn close to Pliny.

A whole lot of great IPAs to go around. Just drink em fresh or you're doing the beer a disservice and it'll taste like shit. Hop oils are volatile.

Disagree. And most experts do to. PtE is still the top of the mountain. It is the standard against which all others are measured.

Not to burst your bubble Huwaryu_in_exile, but Bed of Nails isn't made anywhere near Bret Favre's hometown. Hi Wire Brewing is in Asheville, NC.

You know, now that you mention it, I had heard they were using other breweries to meet demand. My bad.:doh::doh::doh::doh::doh::doh:

Who are these experts and can you cite anything newer than 2010 where Pliny is the clearcut pinnacle of IIPAs? Pliny has its place in craft beer but I live in the IPA mecca and the super fresh, hop oil extract brewed IIPA secret has gotten out and beers like Maharaja by Avery, Hop Venom by Boneyard, Heady Topper by Alchemist, and Pure Hoppiness by Alpine have at least matched Pliny. I'm not bashing PtE. I love that beer. But the reality is there are better IPAs out there today.

Hell, Boneyard's Notorious Triple IPA is miles ahead of Pliny the Younger, which is a nice beer to try a couple times, but far from a drinkable 13% IPA. Notorious is absolutely better.

Well, just this year it took third at GABF. And it has been around for ten years so that right there should tell you something. So there is that. And any BJCP trained person would tell you that PtE is the standard.

Check out Beer Advocate. Rate Beer. Draft Magazine. The BJCP Style Guidelines holds it as the standard.

So, those experts...
