I finally decided to give it a go, because of increased speeds promised. Well let me tell, if you this route, call Comcast and have them put you in bridge mode, so you can by pass their built in router, which truly sucks . Use your third party router and then you got the goods. Great speed and you can actual use your wireless devices without cussing up a storm.

True story.

Fuck comcast and their modem. I don't care how much faster it is, I'll stick with my own modem and not pay them a monthly fee to use theirs. Goddamn I hate comcast...

I've had good results with both using their modem and bridging it (you don't need them to get into this mode, just lookup the username/pw for it).

Not sure why people have a case of the ass over their newer modems that have their hotspot built in either. The nice thing about that is you can use that for your phone/tablet etc and it doesn't touch your paid bandwidth. In a house like mine that has everyone on one device or another, people playing video games, streaming, etc... offloading bandwidth for free isn't a bad deal.

I was ready to go that route, still may. After using their router, I was ready to switch back to century link. Got to say though, my iPad is loading like never before. As long as it continues to work this good, I'll most likely say if it's not broke, don't fix it.

Mmmm what kind of speed do you get with your own modem? I won't mind not renting the Comcast modem and save some coin, as long as I'm not giving up speed.

Wasn't sure if I could use bridge mode without calling them. What's this about hotspots built in? News to me.

Cox customer. I've always owned my own modem.

That is my low numbers. I am usually closer to 70 mb/s & 8 mb/s with a 12 ping.

I am only paying for mid tier internet. With the package, it comes out to about $40 a month. It would be about $60 with out a package.

I can't say it is still happening with every modem they ship, but a few months back it was quite the buzz and I can tell you one of our work locations has it as well as a friend of mine at his house. Search your wifi bands for xfinitywifi SSID. If you do you can log into it and any time that device is near another xfinitywifi hotspot you will automatically log in. It's free to any neighbor or passer by that has a valid xfinity account. This is the part that freaks some people out. However it's a hotspot, not your internal wifi and it's not part of your bandwidth.

Here is an article on that.

Nothing in there that changes my mind. Our comcast email/pw isn't used for anything other than logging into their site. Don't use that email for email even. Have my own domain. So security isn't really an issue. And I use a unique PW for every site I visit. I use a complex cipher I created some time ago and simply use the sites name translated through it for a PW. Never have to remember a PW and no one can crack it and use it for anything.

Nice bandwidth harold.

Will this modem work with phone and cable? I've got bundled service.

You will have to check your ISP to see their list of approved modems. They should have it somewhere on their website. I have a phone/cable/internet bundle & the modem works fine with it.
