I was just about to order a new Magpul but ended up running across these Hogue one's (which look almost identical to the Magpul, only with a tighter fit and more sling points) and thought I'd give one a shot. The reviews I've seen have been really good, just wondering if anyone has any firsthand experience with one?

I ended up getting the FDE model...

Stock came in today and really really like it so far. Haven't shot with it yet but I can't imagine it'll change my opinion. It feels really high quality and is solid as a rock on the rifle. Absolutely zero rattle too, no matter how hard I tried.

I have been wanting to replace my stock with one in this general style. Let me know what you think after you get some range time on it.

I'm off tomorrow and I'm hoping to get to the range to try it out. I'm joining a new range and it's gonna be a matter of being able to get in touch with the owner to pick up my key. If I can make connections with him it's gonna be on. This dude has a 350 yd range where as the one I go to now is only a little over 100.

350?!? Nice! How much padding is on the butt.... of the stock? I'm assuming it's that firm Hogue rubber/polymer stuff.

You are correct, it is the standard firm rubber Hogue uses. Probably won't do much in the way of recoil absorption but the recoil isn't turrible on a .223 anyway.

I just happened to be driving down this country hwy last week for work and noticed a sign on a cow pasture type gate that said "No exploding targets" and thought to myself, "That sounds like some range talk." so I turned around and it is indeed a new shooting range. I called the # on the gate and the dude says it's $100 a year and that includes your wife and a kid up to 16 yrs old. Says he has 12 covered shooting benches with sandbags and a golf cart you can use to drive down and check your targets and stuff. He gives you a key to the gate and you can come and go as you please 7 days a week from 9am til dark. I've been paying $120 a year for just myself to use a crowded 100 yard range that closes at 6 pm everyday... I get off work at 5.

5.56/.223 is damn near nothing but the older and pickier I get the more I appreciate every little creature comfort. Especially if I'm going to shoot in volume.

That man sounds like a saintly genius.

I don't blame you. The stock I originally had on it was a smaller M4 type that was so short on the end that the bottom corner would poke the shit out of your shoulder if shooting from a rest. This one feels like it should be much more comfortable.

And yeah, I like what the dude seems to have going on. He sounded like and older man and said he wanted a family friendly place that was laid back and didn't cost a fortune so he decided to use part of his own farm and make it into a range. I'm pretty excited about finally getting out there.

Made it out to the range with the new stock and it's pretty sweet. It's extremely solid and feels good on the shoulder. I only shot 100 rds. with it but I can tell it's gonna be my favorite. Also managed to shoot 100 rds. with my Shield before a big ass thunderstorm ran me off. Twas a good time.

The range I joined today isn't anything fancy but I like it. Was the only one there the whole 1 1/2 hrs I was there.

Looking down range (target stands every 50 yds out to 350 yds)...

That looks awesome and I am currently very jealous while sitting inside at my desk.

Could you tell a comfort difference with the new stock? or just the fit/construction quality?

It was way more comfortable than the smaller M4 style I was using before. The Hogue has more surface area so it didn't dig into my shoulder like the other would. I was wearing a Nike Dri-Fit material Bama t-shirt and even as slick as the material is, the rubber on the butt pad grips good enough that I didn't have any slippage problems at all. The pad doesn't have a whole lot of give to it so it didn't do much for recoil, so that may be something to consider.
